Contact Lenses and Children

The scientific advancements have made it possible for even young people including children to now wear contact lenses. Contrary to conventional wisdom, there is no reason to wait until the children's eyes stop changing. They can start wearing lenses as soon as they prescribed a number and are required to start wearing spectacles. In fact, when supported by medical reasons, children as young as two and three years of age, can also wear contact lenses.

To ensure that children can wear spectacles al the time, the following should be taken into consideration

The range of lenses available for both, children and adults is very much the same. It is important to ensure that the children go for regular check-ups to the eye doctor. Let the doctor be the judge of which lens to wear, change in lens prescriptions, choosing the best type of lens materials, duration of wear etc.

There are many types of contact lenses suitable for both the young and the old. Most young people prefer soft and daily-disposable contact lenses, as these are easy and convenient to wear, relatively low-maintenance and ideal to start with. They are also apt for sportspersons and to correct long-sightedness. On the other hand, hard gas-permeable lenses are a better option for short-sighted children as these often tend to slow down any increase in prescription.
