LASIK
LASIK is a surgery conducted to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism using the laser technique.
During the surgery a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. The flap is then folded back and some amount of corneal tissue lying underneath is removed using an excimer laser. The flap is put back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.
LASIK is an outpatient procedure. The LASIK surgeon uses a computer to adjust the laser for your particular prescription. You are required to focus on a specific light for a short time while the laser sends pulses of light to reshape your cornea. LASIK surgery usually takes less than five minutes.
The goal of LASIK is different with different problems. To cure nearsightedness, LASIK helps to flatten the too-steep cornea. In farsighted people, a steeper cornea is created. Astigmatism on the other hand is corrected by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.
The first step when considering LASIK surgery is finding a good surgeon who will determine whether the procedure is good for you. Your LASIK surgeon will examine your eyes to determine their health, what kind of vision correction you need, and how much laser ablation or corneal tissue removal is required. The tests will also determine whether or not you are qualified for the surgery.
If for some reason you are disqualified for LASIK, you could also consider another similar eye surgery called the PRK, which is conducted without the flap. There are also several non-laser vision correction procedures you could ask your doctor about. He will check your prescription and eye structure to help determine which procedure is best for you.
Some people try to have eye surgery performed during their vacation, but be sure to check that you are going to someone who is certified to perform the procedure. We have found one good place, and this clinic is in Budapest
